ARMENIAN EAGLE OF SEVASTOPOL
In the chronicle of the Great Patriotic War Sevastopol entered as symbol of courage and heroism, and in the battle for its defense Armenian sons also wrote bright pages of feat.
Among warriors of the defense of Sevastopol was Guard Captain, holder of the order “Red Star” Amasia Garnik Melikyan.
After 18 days of his marriage with a special order he was sent to the Far East, city of Voroshilov (Nikolsk-Ussuriyskiy) to participate in the actions at the Soviet-China border railway. In 1939 A.Melikyan participates in the actions in Mongolia. After that, in 1940, already in the uniform of lieutenant, he was transferred to artillery regiment as a battalion commander.
In 1941 Amasia enters the Highest Military Academy after Frunze, however his education lasted very short. The war starts on June 22, 1941 and he goes to fight in the Ukrainian regiment.
On May 6, 1944 promotion of the 87th Guards Division provides Artillery Division Captain Melikyan.
Sevastopol battle completes on May 9, 1944 with the victory of the Soviet army. In his letter Melikyan wrote: “… we move forward very well, the Germans are running like crazy. Very soon whole Crimea will be liberated”.
