THE WEAKER SEX IN A STRONG ARMY

Now no longer is in vogue the phrase “a woman’s place is in the kitchen.” Yet Greek philosopher Plato foresaw that there will come a time when women equal to men will possess different crafts and even go to war. Today in the armies of many countries it is already possible to see female soldiers.

On February 19, in the RA MoD administrative complex the concluding discussion of the study “The prospect of enlarging representation and participation of women in the defense sector” took place, which was held in the framework of cooperation program of 2014 between the RA Ministry of Defense and the UN Population Fund.

In his opening speech 1st Deputy Minister Davit Tonoyan emphasized that protecting the rights of female soldiers, to ensure their promotion and equal opportunities has long been on the agenda of defense reforms of the Armenian Defense Ministry. “For a country like Armenia, additional human resources can never be considered superfluous, especially in the defense sector, and in the age of technology to ignore women’s professional resources, only on the basis of stereotypes, can cause significant damage to both the system’s image, and professional skills.”

Then the results of the research were presented by experts Vahan Asatryan and Arthur Atanesyan. During the discussion many suggestions, points of view were presented.

Discussion was attended also by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom to Armenia Katherine Leach.
