IN THE MEMORY OF HEROES-“AFGHANS”

On February 15th in the park “Victory” (Haghtanak) of Yerevan the 23rd anniversary of the withdrawal of the Soviet troops from Afghanistan was celebrated. The function’s participants marched through the Honour Path and lay a wreath on the memorial to the perished in the war. Head of RA AF GS Colonel General Youriy Khachatourov, RA Afghan War Veterans Union’s members participated in the procession.

During the Afghan war (1979-1989) 15 thousand Soviet servicemen perished, the losses of the Afghans including the peaceful population reached a few hundred thousand. According to the official data 3762 servicemen, including 400 officers, from the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic were sent to Afghanistan. 128 Armenians died.
